Installer Spotlight: Advanced Lining Rehabilitates a Community’s Lifeline in Montana
In the picturesque region outside Bozeman, Montana, a 40′ x 40′ steel potable water tank served as the main source of drinking water for the community. Over time, the tank began to leak, leading to rust and corrosion on its exterior. Advanced Lining, an OBIC-certified installer with extensive experience in potable water tank projects, was called upon to restore the tank and ensure the community’s continued access to clean water. Peak Water, its sister company, did the bypassing of the tank as that company is also the water operator for the community.
Advanced Lining did face some challenges as they began the project. The tank’s remote location on top of a hill made accessibility difficult. The dirt road leading to the site required a wrecker on standby to assist if necessary, although fortunately, it wasn’t needed. In addition, the project was initially expected to be completed within two weeks, but an unexpected family emergency with the sandblasting contractor delayed the process.
As a result, additional Advanced Lining crew members were brought in to support the reduced sandblasting team, extending the project to a total of 20 days. Despite the challenges with scaffolding for a tank this large and the surrounding terrain, the team ensured the highest safety standards throughout the project.
Advanced Lining began by priming the tank with OBIC’s potable water primer, chosen for its excellent adhesion and chemical resistance properties. Given the bolted steel nature of the tank, OBIC 1306 foam was applied to all seams and bolt heads, providing a seamless and rigid polyurethane barrier to prevent future leaks. The final step involved applying a top coat of OBIC 1100, an NSF/ANSI 61-certified polyurea coating designed specifically for potable water systems.
The coating process was a success, eliminating the leaks and preventing future corrosion. Thanks to OBIC’s high-quality products, the tank is now equipped to serve the community for decades to come, eliminating the need for exterior repairs or future replacement and ensuring the long-term protection and peace of mind for the community and its water supply.
